AutoCAD File->Save or File->Open Crash…

If are experiencing crashing problems using the File->Open or File->Save dialog inside of AutoCAD (or any other Autodesk product), there are a few items that can cause this:

  1. New HP Machine If you have recently purchased a new HP computer or you have an HP computer for which you have recently carried out an HP update on Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1…Check if you have any of these applications installed:
    • HP Trust Center
    • HP Client Security Manager

If so, uninstall them and reboot. We recommend you find an alternative as they cause this issue.

  2. For AutoCAD versions >= 2008, you can try disabling the InfoCenter toolbar at the top right of AutoCAD.
    1. If you know LISP, this code will work for all versions of AutoCAD 2008 or higher
      1. add this code to the end of your acad.lsp (vl-registry-write (strcat “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\” (vlax-product-key)”\\Applications\\InfoCenterAcConn”) “LOADCTRLS” 0)
    2. If you do not know LISP
      1. Start Regedit.exe
      2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD\<Release.Number>\ACAD-<VerticalCode>:<LanguageCode>\Applications\InfoCenterAcConn
      3. Set the LoadCtrls value to 0
      4. To turn it back on, simply set LoadCtrls value to 76
  3. Remove all USB devices – older versions of AutoCAD don’t understand what a Samsung Phone is, and this can cause crashes.
  4. If you have been opening DWG files from an external drive (e.g. USB drive) try re-connecting the drive…
  5. The latest Windows Operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10) correctly enforce permission settings for your personal files (Documents folder etc). The problem is that your older version of AutoCAD does not understand these new permission settings, and this can stop you being about to open your DWG files and even cause AutoCAD crash. As a quick test, copy the DWG files that always crash when you save to a USB drive, then create a new folder called c:\MyDwgs, now copy the files from your USB to the c:\MyDwgs folder. Finally, try AutoCAD with the DWG files in c:\MyDwgs – is AutoCAD working now? If so, you can either leave your DWG files in that folder, or you’ll need to relax the permissions on your DWG folder to allow access to AutoCAD.
  6. MSN Plugin – if you see MSN as an entry in your Windows Explorer, uninstall MSN – AutoCAD doesn’t like this.
  7. For versions of AutoCAD >= 2000i here’s a quick fix to bypass the problem (although hard to remember each time) – on starting AutoCAD, type “Options” at the command line, select the ‘Files’ tab, click ‘Browse’, then simply click cancel. Now cancel out of the Options dialog altogether. Try your File->Open… Does it work? If so, you should now be good until the next time you start AutoCAD.
  8. If you have a non-HP machine that is giving you this issue or (2) didn’t work for you, please record below in the comments section:
    1. What computer make you are running
    2. What specific Windows version you are running
    3. What exact version of AutoCAD you are running (e.g. AutoCAD Architecture 2008 32bit)
    4. What AutoCAD service packs (if any) you have applied
    5. What anti-virus software you are running. We’ll see if we can solve this for you…

  10. If all this fails, you can of course set FILEDIA = 0 at the command line to turn off the File Dialog User Interface

  • Thanks for sharing mate.

After a long time trying different things and searching for a solution we fixed this issue just deleting the HP security apps.

    Thank you very much!

    • Bill,
I noticed a help request on an autocad forum, in which you were having the same "Fatal Error: Attempt to delete class 'AecImpObj" which still has registered descendants"

I did not see any replies, offering suggestions for resolution. Did you figure out what was causing the problem and if so, how did you resolve it.

      Much in need,
      Marshall

  • I have Windows 8.1, Land Desktop 3 and have longbow converter V6.59, I installed the program and everything runs fine for a while until I get a runtime error, my IT person thinks that it is a windows updates that are causing the problem. I uninstall LDT and re-install and everything runs fine again until the next time-this happens every couple months or so. Do you know of anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks,
    Holly

    • You most likely need the latest version of the Longbow Converter App, once you have it, uninstall then reinstall AutoCAD using the Converter

  • I experience fatal errors when opening any drawing files, it is not a specific drawing that always crashes and it doesn't crash all the time.

    D. Unable to install either of SP1 or SP2 taken from the links you provided. Autodesk no longer support so SP files not available from them.
    E. Running McAfee antivirus - supplied by Dell

I have followed your detailed instructions, and yet I get Error 114 when trying to apply SP1. If I try SP2 it also doesn't work as says old file found but not a match. Need the solution to these issues.

  • I am using Autocad Architectural 2012 and am having issues saving files with Windows 10. It just started happening after installing updates. There are no error messages it just freezes and I have to go to task manager to close out.

  • Hi,

Recently, Autocad started to crash everytime we went to 'open' or 'save as' using a window in which we had to 'browse to' (hope that makes sence). Using #7 on your page https://blog.longbowsoftware.com/autocad-file-save-or-file-open-crash/ fixed this as long as it is done eveytime Acad is started as you describe. Previously, and for years, this has never come up. Would you be able to give some insight on what is going on.

Also, I did just also connect my phone to the computer to transfer over a couple of photos. It took several attemps through windows to get the folders on the devise to 'read' or 'populate' in the windows box.

Dell Optiplex 755, Intel core duo cpu E8300 @ 2.83Ghz

Thank you very much, we will definitely keep Longbow in mind should we upgrade Acad to run on our current system. if you have any advise for doing so would be greatly appreciated.

  • I found on the autodesk site try the rest default option, from the autodesk main menu.
All the suggestions above, none worked...kept crashing on open, save or save as. I tried 'repair', reinstalled everything and even played with the 1 and 0 in all the options noted, nowt. ....but resetting cured it all. Just a pain having to customise back to my old settings which i've had for years and forgotten where all the commands are..but small beer compared to the issues I was having.

  • Having a similar problem with Autcad 2011 on a windows 7 install, been working fine for years - then this.

The number 7 option worked for me... what is behind it? What is it doing? Is there a way to solve it permanently?

  • This problem just suddenly started, that is, I had no problem when I shut down on Friday and when I

cranked back up on Monday I have the problem. There may have been a routine Microsoft Windows

update prior to the problem happening. I'm not sure

When I execute a "SAVE AS", AutoCAD freezes up. This also happens when I use a routine whose dialog

box has a "BROWSE" button, when I select that "BROWSE" button (Windows explorer problem maybe?)

I did look at your blog article at

    https://blog.longbowsoftware.com/autocad-file-save-or-file-open-crash/

and tried the suggested, set FILEDAI=0 and that works for the "SAVE AS" from the command line, but

did not help with routines with a "BROWSE" buttons, such as "INSERT bLOCK" or "WBLOCK".

So as was offered in that blog article, I am sending you my following system information in hopes

that can can offer a solution.

    Thanks,
    Dan Capps
