Following the instructions, upon completion all of the desktop icons were blinking rapidly. After rebooting, when attempting to run Eudora I got the message, "The program can't start because MSVCR71.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." Closing that message I get the same messages for MFC71.dll and MSVCP71.dll.
I ended up copying the three files from the retired laptop to this one, and it worked. I have no idea why they didn't install normally.
