AutoCAD File->Save or File->Open Crash…

If are experiencing crashing problems using the File->Open or File->Save dialog inside of AutoCAD (or any other Autodesk product), there are a few items that can cause this:

  1. New HP Machine If you have recently purchased a new HP computer or you have an HP computer for which you have recently carried out an HP update on Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1…Check if you have any of these applications installed:
    • HP Trust Center
    • HP Client Security Manager

If so, uninstall them and reboot. We recommend you find an alternative as they cause this issue.

  2. For AutoCAD versions >= 2008, you can try disabling the InfoCenter toolbar at the top right of AutoCAD.
    1. If you know LISP, this code will work for all versions of AutoCAD 2008 or higher
      1. add this code to the end of your acad.lsp (vl-registry-write (strcat “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\” (vlax-product-key)”\\Applications\\InfoCenterAcConn”) “LOADCTRLS” 0)
    2. If you do not know LISP
      1. Start Regedit.exe
      2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD\<Release.Number>\ACAD-<VerticalCode>:<LanguageCode>\Applications\InfoCenterAcConn
      3. Set the LoadCtrls value to 0
      4. To turn it back on, simply set LoadCtrls value to 76
  3. Remove all USB devices – older versions of AutoCAD don’t understand what a Samsung Phone is, and this can cause crashes.
  4. If you have been opening DWG files from an external drive (e.g. USB drive) try re-connecting the drive…
  5. The latest Windows Operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10) correctly enforce permission settings for your personal files (Documents folder etc). The problem is that your older version of AutoCAD does not understand these new permission settings, and this can stop you being about to open your DWG files and even cause AutoCAD crash. As a quick test, copy the DWG files that always crash when you save to a USB drive, then create a new folder called c:\MyDwgs, now copy the files from your USB to the c:\MyDwgs folder. Finally, try AutoCAD with the DWG files in c:\MyDwgs – is AutoCAD working now? If so, you can either leave your DWG files in that folder, or you’ll need to relax the permissions on your DWG folder to allow access to AutoCAD.
  6. MSN Plugin – if you see MSN as an entry in your Windows Explorer, uninstall MSN – AutoCAD doesn’t like this.
  7. For versions of AutoCAD >= 2000i here’s a quick fix to bypass the problem (although hard to remember each time) – on starting AutoCAD, type “Options” at the command line, select the ‘Files’ tab, click ‘Browse’, then simply click cancel. Now cancel out of the Options dialog altogether. Try your File->Open… Does it work? If so, you should now be good until the next time you start AutoCAD.
  8. If you have a non-HP machine that is giving you this issue or (2) didn’t work for you, please record below in the comments section:
    1. What computer make you are running
    2. What specific Windows version you are running
    3. What exact version of AutoCAD you are running (e.g. AutoCAD Architecture 2008 32bit)
    4. What AutoCAD service packs (if any) you have applied
    5. What anti-virus software you are running. We’ll see if we can solve this for you…

  10. If all this fails, you can of course set FILEDIA = 0 at the command line to turn off the File Dialog User Interface

  1. Thanks for sharing mate.

After a long time trying different things and searching for a solution we fixed this issue just deleting the HP security apps.

    Thank you very much!

    Fernando

  2. On opening a drawing I get AutoCAD error FATAL ERROR: Attempt to delete class AecImpObj which still has registered descendants.

    • Bill,
I noticed a help request on an autocad forum, in which you were having the same “Fatal Error: Attempt to delete class ‘AecImpObj” which still has registered descendants”

I did not see any replies, offering suggestions for resolution. Did you figure out what was causing the problem and if so, how did you resolve it.

      Much in need,
      Marshall

  3. I have Windows 8.1, Land Desktop 3 and have longbow converter V6.59, I installed the program and everything runs fine for a while until I get a runtime error, my IT person thinks that it is a windows updates that are causing the problem. I uninstall LDT and re-install and everything runs fine again until the next time-this happens every couple months or so. Do you know of anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks,
    Holly

    • You most likely need the latest version of the Longbow Converter App, once you have it, uninstall then reinstall AutoCAD using the Converter

  4. I experience fatal errors when opening any drawing files, it is not a specific drawing that always crashes and it doesn’t crash all the time.

    D. Unable to install either of SP1 or SP2 taken from the links you provided. Autodesk no longer support so SP files not available from them.
    E. Running McAfee antivirus – supplied by Dell

I have followed your detailed instructions, and yet I get Error 114 when trying to apply SP1. If I try SP2 it also doesn’t work as says old file found but not a match. Need the solution to these issues.

  6. I am using Autocad Architectural 2012 and am having issues saving files with Windows 10. It just started happening after installing updates. There are no error messages it just freezes and I have to go to task manager to close out.

  7. Hi,

Recently, Autocad started to crash everytime we went to ‘open’ or ‘save as’ using a window in which we had to ‘browse to’ (hope that makes sence). Using #7 on your page https://blog.longbowsoftware.com/autocad-file-save-or-file-open-crash/ fixed this as long as it is done eveytime Acad is started as you describe. Previously, and for years, this has never come up. Would you be able to give some insight on what is going on.

Also, I did just also connect my phone to the computer to transfer over a couple of photos. It took several attemps through windows to get the folders on the devise to ‘read’ or ‘populate’ in the windows box.

Thank you very much, we will definitely keep Longbow in mind should we upgrade Acad to run on our current system. if you have any advise for doing so would be greatly appreciated.

  8. I found on the autodesk site try the rest default option, from the autodesk main menu.
All the suggestions above, none worked…kept crashing on open, save or save as. I tried ‘repair’, reinstalled everything and even played with the 1 and 0 in all the options noted, nowt. ….but resetting cured it all. Just a pain having to customise back to my old settings which i’ve had for years and forgotten where all the commands are..but small beer compared to the issues I was having.

  9. Having a similar problem with Autcad 2011 on a windows 7 install, been working fine for years – then this.

The number 7 option worked for me… what is behind it? What is it doing? Is there a way to solve it permanently?

  10. This problem just suddenly started, that is, I had no problem when I shut down on Friday and when I

cranked back up on Monday I have the problem. There may have been a routine Microsoft Windows

update prior to the problem happening. I’m not sure

When I execute a “SAVE AS”, AutoCAD freezes up. This also happens when I use a routine whose dialog

box has a “BROWSE” button, when I select that “BROWSE” button (Windows explorer problem maybe?)

I did look at your blog article at

    https://blog.longbowsoftware.com/autocad-file-save-or-file-open-crash/

and tried the suggested, set FILEDAI=0 and that works for the “SAVE AS” from the command line, but

did not help with routines with a “BROWSE” buttons, such as “INSERT bLOCK” or “WBLOCK”.

So as was offered in that blog article, I am sending you my following system information in hopes

that can can offer a solution.

    Thanks,
    Dan Capps

  11. Problems with AutoCad Civil CD 2010
Installed on Windows 10. When I tried to apply the AutoCad updates the installer said “the expected AutoCad product could not be found”.
The program seems to work fairly well when running “AutoCad Civil 3D 2010 as AutoCad 2010”, as long as the profiles are set to 2D drafting and annotation, or to 3D Modeling the system works. However when the profile is changed to Civil 3D Imperial or to Tool or Task based Geospatial the menu ribbons and banners don’t work or work very slowly, commands are erratic, and the program soon crashes with “Fatal Exception…
The open/save etc drop down works in the 3D, 2D work spaces but fails to drop when the work space is changed to Civil 3D or to Geospatial spaces…

    computer: ASUS : Intel Core i5-6400 DDr4 16GB
    Windows: Windows 10 Home
Auto Cad: AutoCad Civil 3D 2010
    Anti-Virus: McAfee Total Protection

BTW: Would also like to install AutoCad Map 2009, however when tried before nothing would work. Could get Map 09 to work by itself, but when tried to install Civil 2010 everything went haywire.

  12. Hello,
I am attempting to get AutoCAD Lt 2012 operational using longbow software on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with Intel i5 Processor, 256 GB storage etc. Many attempts have been made (including a computer / software expert) to get operational but all gallant attempts have failed miserably thus far – comments ranging from use only 32 bit version, uninstall and re-install, graphics card too slow etc; etc. Problem being as you open AutoCAD LT comes up nicely but as soon as one attempt use a ribbon item it crashes.
I am wondering as to the suitability of the software on Surface Pro.
Is there any advice or answers – or has anyone got AutoCAD LT 21012 operational on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 using Longbow package?

  13. I have Autocad 2009 with update 1 on Windows 7 ultimate Dell Precision M6500 laptop.
The open, save, save as commands lock up my autocad when using toolbar or typing in command.

I dont have any virus software yet.

  14. I found that my Droid Maxx causes the same problem, when it is hooked the computers USB and I try to open, save of find an xref path, AutoCAD will freeze. When I close the program through the Task Manager, unhook the phone and restart AutoCAD, everything works fine.

  15. I’m trying to run autocad land development desktop 2i on a:

Dell Vostro 1510, Intel core duo 2 T5780 at 2.0 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, 32 bit system
Windows 7 professional, service pack 1
    Webroot Secure Anywhere antivirus

Doesn’t matter where the .dwg file originates (USB or from hard drive), I get the same “runtime error – C:\ldt2i\acad.exe – abnormal program termination” at every attempt to open any .dwg file followed by autocad shutting down.

  16. I installed AutoCAD LT 2008 on my new pc (Windows 10) with the help of your latest Longbow Converter about a week or so ago. I have had weird behaviour from some of the ribbon menus, particularly the ‘save as drawing’ which won’t pull down a tree view of locations as expected (it worked perfectly before on my old Win XP). When I eventually get a tree view (via the left hand column) the top of the tree is something called Public Desktop. Then, more often than not, the program crashes. It also crashes when I click on the ‘up’ button and ‘create new folder’ button.

From your list of suggested fixes,
2B: I had a look for the HKEY file but there were none labelled Autodesk.
7: Didn’t work for me (even the twice suggestion by John F).

If it’s any clue, the Autodesk feedback report screen which comes up after crashes won’t go away after submission, and quitte often AutoCAD is still running after reports of its crash! What do you think? Reinstall?

    My details:
    A. Dell Optiplex 3050
    B. Windows 10 Pro
    C. Autocad LT 2008
    D. No service packs.
    E. Defender

    • It’s difficult to say what the problem might be, but you should expect some differences in the User Interface between XP and your new system. The crash should not be happening though. Do you have any special extensions installed on your system? Like MSN or anything that extends the Windows Explorer? These can cause issues with older versions of AutoCAD because these additions are not expected. If you are stuck, you should contact Longbow Software Support.

  17. I started to suffer from the “read only” attribute in Mid January 2022 – I assume after another Microsoft update to Windows 10.
Setting up a batch file to allow writing an edited drawing (attrib -R /S) seems to have worked, but it seems to have been applied to all files and directories although it was run in my drawings directory, but you will need to have administrator rights to run this command file. Maybe I should change the batch file to explicitly start in the drawings directory.
I assume I will need to run it periodically when the files are set as read only again.

  18. I had a series of increasing problems running Autocad2000 in Windows10. They started on the last week of January. Having looked a virus software as the cause of this we turned our attention to Windows10.
Autocad and another program had no accredited publisher in the list of applications in the Windows set up and there is no way it appears for ordinary mortals to add that information. That seems to stop Windows allowing an un-recognised publisher from saving files.
Then we found that the “compatibliity” tests could be re-run and used to add a “run as administrator” option to the software. This then gives the application an opportunity to save files which basically solves the main problem I was having.
It is difficult to be absolutely sure this is the real issue as we had been playing with tune-up programs which we un-installed after not only old versions of {acreditted) software were removed but current versions stopped working too, but fortunately we found we could reverse this process that cured that issue.
Now rather than be running the current version the system has now reverted to Windows 10 Version 21H2. After any Windows update I suspect I will have to go through the troubleshooter route again to re-acquire administrator rights to un-recognised application publishers.
