Solving the AutoCAD Failed Installation, Aborted 1603 error

If you are receiving a 1603 error when installing AutoCAD, something like:

  • Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable (x86) Failed Installation aborted, Result=1603 or
  • Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable (x64) Failed Installation aborted, Result=1603 or
  • Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable (x86) Failed Installation aborted, Result=1603 or
  • Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable (x64) Failed Installation aborted, Result=1603 or
  • An error occured during installation of assembly Microsoft VC80.CRT version=…..

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open your Control Panel, click Programs and Features
  2. In the top right part of the Programs and Features window, there is a search box, search for ‘Redistributable‘ then press Enter
  3. Now uninstall all of the ‘Redistributable‘ entries that relate to your specific error, e.g. if you get a 1603 error for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable (x64) then uninstall that
  4. Once you have uninstalled all of them, now try your AutoCAD installer again…

Installing 32bit AutoCAD 2011 on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10

  • “This operating system is not supported by AutoCAD® 2011”
  • “You cannot install this product on the current operating system”
  • “You are attempting to use a 32-bit installer on a 64-bit operating system”
  • “This is a 32-bit AutoCAD 2011®. It cannot be installed on 64-bit Windows”

Installing AutoCAD 2011 32bit on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 64bit can be very easily defined in these short steps…

NOTE: These steps do not bypass normal Autodesk licensing/authorization, you should expect to use your own serial numbers in the normal way.

  1. Obtain your copy of the Longbow Converter here
  2. If you have CDs (if not check (3) below):
    1. Using Windows Explorer, copy Disk 1 of your AutoCAD 2011 CD to your hard drive, to a folder path c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2011
    2. If you have more CD’s, copy them all directly over the top of Disk 1, overwrite all files in your previously copied c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2011 folder
  3. If you have a single self extracting exe downloaded from Autodesk (something like AutoCAD_2011_Multilingual_Americas_WIN_32bit.exe)
    1. Run the exe, it will ask to unzip to a folder inside of c:\Autodesk, make a note of the folder for later use (we’ll refer to it from here as c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2011), now click OK. Wait until all of the files have extracted, when they do, the AutoCAD 2011 setup will automatically launch – simply close it and move to the next step.
  4. Now, start the Longbow Converter tool
    1. select the 1st tab named “AutoCAD 32bit Installer Converter
    2. Using the ‘‘ button, pick the c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2011 folder
    3. click the Convert button.
  5. Once the conversion process is complete, click Install/Run Setup to start setup. Simply install as normal.
  6. Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users: Once the installation process is complete, go back to the Converter, select the 3rd tab, pick the newly installed C:\Program Files (x86)\AutoCAD 2011 folder, then click Fix.
  7. Now you can happily run your 32bit AutoCAD 2011 on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10!

Installing AutoCAD 2011 Service Packs

AutoCAD 2011 has 2 updates, you must install Update 1.1 first then Update 2… Here are the instructions for installing the AutoCAD 2011 service packs

  7. Now you can happily run your AutoCAD 2009 32bit on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

  5. Once the conversion process is complete, click Install/Run Setup to start setup. Simply install as normal.
    1. Once installed, we recommend you disable the AutoCAD Communication Center/InfoCenter toolbar as it uses a lot of memory, causes slow startup and most people don’t use it anyway!
  6. Now you can happily run your AutoCAD 2015 32bit on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10!

    1. Next, using the ‘‘ button select the newly created c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2012 folder, and click the ‘Convert‘ button.
      1. If the Converter complains that this is not a 32bit installer, make sure you select the folder which contains the setup.exe and the setup.ini files in the root of the installation media
  5. Once the conversion process is complete, click Install/Run Setup to start setup. Simply install as normal.
  6. Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users: Once the installation process is complete, go back to the Converter, select the 3rd tab, pick the newly installed C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2012 folder, then click Fix.
  7. Now you can happily run your AutoCAD 2012 32bit on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10

Installing AutoCAD 2013 Service Packs

There are 2 sp’s for AutoCAD 2013, these are the the 32bit versions of the sp’s

  1. Here’s sp1 – AutoCAD 2013 sp1 – install as normal
  2. Here’s sp2 – AutoCAD 2013 sp2 – install as normal

  1. Obtain your purchased copy of the Longbow Converter here
  2. If you have CDs (if not check (3) below)
    1. start In the Converter tool
    2. pick the File menu at the top then pick “Backup CD to Disk”
    3. Follow the prompts
    4. Next, jump to step 4 below…
  3. If you have a single self extracting exe downloaded from Autodesk
    1. Run the exe, it will ask to unzip to a folder inside of c:\Autodesk, make a note of the folder for later use (we’ll refer to it from here as c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2010)…
    2. Now click OK.
      1. Wait until all of the files have extracted, when they do, the AutoCAD 2010 setup will automatically launch – simply close it and move to the next step.
  4. Next, inside the Longbow Converter tool
    1. select the 1st tab named “AutoCAD 32bit Installer Converter
    2. pick the folder where you just copied your AutoCAD CD to; namely the c:\Autodesk\AutoCAD2010 folder
    3. then click the Convert button.
  5. Once the conversion process is complete
    1. click Install/Run Setup to start setup.
    2. Simply install as normal.
  6. Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users: Once the installation process is complete…
    1. go back to the Converter tool
    2. select the 3rd tab named “Old AutoCAD Program Reviver
    3. pick the newly installed C:\Program Files (x86)\AutoCAD 2010 folder
    4. then click “Fix Old Program“.
  7. Now you can happily run your 32bit AutoCAD 2010 on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10!

Installing AutoCAD 2010 Service Packs

AutoCAD 2010 has 2 service packs, instead of calling them sp1 and sp2 they decided to call them Update1 and Update2. You only need to install Update2 because it already includes Update1.

  1. Download the AutoCAD 2010 Update 2 (sp2)
  2. Unzip and simply run the autocad2010update2.exe to install the update

    3. Same again for Disk 3
  3. If you have a single self extracting exe downloaded from Autodesk
    1. Run the exe, it will ask to unzip to a folder inside of c:\Autodesk, make a note of the folder for later use (we’ll refer to it from here as c:\Autodesk\Civil3d2010), now click OK. Wait until all of the files have extracted, when they do, the Civil 3D 2010 setup will automatically launch – simply close it and move to the next step.
  4. Now, start the Longbow Converter tool, select the 1st tab, pick the c:\Autodesk\Civil3d2010 folder, and click the Convert button.
  5. Once the conversion process is complete, click Install/Run Setup to start setup. Simply install as normal.
  6. Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users: Once the installation process is complete, go back to the Converter, select the 3rd tab, pick the newly installed C:\Program Files (x86)\AutoCAD Civil3d 2010 folder, then click Fix.
  7. Now you can happily run your Civil 3D 2010 32bit on Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8 64bit.

Installing the Civil 3d sp3 (Update 3.1)

We recommend that you download and install the latest sp3 from Autodesk which can be found here – AutoCAD Civil 3d 2010 sp3

Installing 64bit AutoCAD 2012 on Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 64bit

Your 64bit AutoCAD 2012 was never designed to run in Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 64bit (these versions of Windows are newer than AutoCAD 2012). In order for your AutoCAD 2012 to run as it did in previous versions of Windows, you need to follow these easy steps…

NOTE: These steps do not bypass normal Autodesk licensing/authorization, you should expect to use your own serial numbers in the normal way.

  1. Obtain your copy of the Longbow Converter here
  2. Start the Converter tool
    1. Pick the 1st tab named “AutoCAD 32bit Installer Converter
    2. Using your mouse, right click the tab text “AutoCAD 32bit Installer Converter” so that it changes to “AutoCAD 64bit Installer Converter
    3. Next, using the “…” button, select your AutoCAD installation CD and follow the instructions presented by the Converter tool user interface.
  3. Once you have completed the AutoCAD installation process…
    1. close the setup program then start the Converter software
    2. Select the 3rd tab “Old AutoCAD Program Reviver
      1. Using the “…” button, pick the newly installed C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2012 folder
      2. then click “Fix Old Program
  4. Now you can happily run your AutoCAD 2012 64bit on Windows 10 (even on Windows 10 Creators Update 1703)
