Opening AutoCAD DWG file gives “Drawing File was created by an incompatible version” message

If you are trying to open a DWG file with AutoCAD and you get the message “Drawing File was created by an incompatible version” it’s because somewhere along the line your AutoCAD DWG files were saved with a newer version of AutoCAD.

All is not lost, you can make them open again in your version of AutoCAD, you just need to download the free DWGTrueView App from Autodesk – http://www.autodesk.com/products/dwg/viewers

Once installed, start DWGTrueview and open the DWG file in question, then save as making sure to select the lowest DWG file version that matches your version of AutoCAD.

Authorization/Activation problems with AutoCAD 2006 and AutoCAD 2007

After you activate and then restart your Autodesk 2006 or 2007 product, you receive error 0.1.0011 or 11.1.6011 and are required to reactivate.

This problem can occur for Autodesk’s 2006/2007-based products on computers with SATA Raid controllers.

Note: This update must be applied to all computers that share a license. Therefore, if you apply this update to one computer and then want to use the Portable License Utility to transfer the license to another computer, be sure to install the update on that computer, too.

If this update is applied to a computer that does not have a SATA Raid controller, the license on that computer will be broken. You will need to reactivate the product to repair the license.

Upgrading your working AutoCAD to a new Microsoft Windows version (like Windows 10)

Here are some useful notes on what to do with your AutoCAD when upgrading your Windows version, including upgrading from Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 to Windows 10…

Windows XP and Windows Vista AutoCAD users upgrading to Windows 10

For those of you who are still running AutoCAD on Windows XP and want to upgrade to Windows 10, you will need to first install Windows 10, then you need the Longbow Converter tool to install your AutoCAD – click on the version of AutoCAD you have (it explains all that you need to do) : AutoCAD R14 AutoCAD 2000 AutoCAD 2000i AutoCAD 2002 AutoCAD 2004 AutoCAD 2005 AutoCAD 2006 AutoCAD 2007 AutoCAD 2008 32bit AutoCAD 2009 32bit AutoCAD 2010 32bit AutoCAD 2011 32bit AutoCAD 2012 32bit AutoCAD 2013 32bit AutoCAD 2014 32bit

If you can’t find your version listed, use the “Search” at the top left of this page

Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 AutoCAD users upgrading to Windows 10

If you have an existing working installation of AutoCAD running on Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and are thinking about upgrading your currently Windows version to a newer Windows version – I have some advise for you: be cautious! You see, with every new version of Windows (and its updates) comes a new set of compatibility issues, registry changes, file system security updates, internet browser updates, etc which if you blindly upgrade will most likely render your working AutoCAD useless.

With that said, it is totally possible to upgrade to the newest version of Windows and bring your old AutoCAD with you (that’s the point of our Longbow Converter solution) just be sure to do of a couple of things…

  1. First, *you must* have the latest version of the Longbow Converter (see below); we are constantly updating this solution to solve the ever changing world of Windows and their security updates.
  2. Second, find your particular Windows upgrade scenario below and follow the instructions ***precisely*** as documented!.
All AutoCAD users running Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 upgrading to Windows 10

Our Longbow Converter tool fully supports Windows 10. We specifically tested the Windows 10 64bit Enterprise and Windows 10 32bit Education versions with a combination of around 850 different install combinations.

Here’s what you need to do in order to upgrade to Windows 10:

  1. Finally, reinstall your AutoCAD as you did previously using the instructions on this blog (if your specific instructions are missing or not up to date with Windows 10, please let us know by clicking on this link and we’ll get it written up for you)
  2. Obtain the latest Longbow Converter supporting Windows 10 here
  3. Upgrade to Windows 10
  4. Make sure you uninstall any previously installed Longbow Converter versions.
  5. Make sure you uninstall all AutoCAD products before doing the upgrade to Windows 10, you *must* do this otherwise your AutoCAD may never startup again and you will have to wipe your computer to fix it.
  6. What happens if you already upgraded to Windows 10 with your existing AutoCAD installation – most likely your AutoCAD will not run, nor will you be able to repair it. The best thing to get your AutoCAD running again is to carry out a Windows Reset.
32bit AutoCAD users of versions 2002 thru 2013 and running or Windows 7 upgrading to Windows 8.1

If you have a working Windows 7 machine and you are thinking to upgrade to Windows 8.1 best just stay where you are. Better to upgrade to Windows 10, aside from being a free upgrade, it seems to be a much better platform too.

With that said, if you must upgrade your working Windows 7 system to Windows 8.1, then it is of course possible using our Longbow Converter tool – you ***must*** first uninstall all AutoCAD products before doing the upgrade. Once Windows 8.1 has been installed, just use the Longbow Converter to re-install your 32bit AutoCAD software as before.
